Acquisition of Landmark Knowledge from Spatial Description
نویسندگان
چکیده
Maps and spatial descriptions are two different styles in expressing geographical information. Each style has its own merits and demerits. When information is given in one style, it is sometimes required to convert it to the other style. A vast amount of spatial descriptions are available electronically, especially on the World Wide Web. If geographical knowledge extracted from spatial descriptions were supplemented into maps, their usefulness will be increased. We have developed a system of extracting geographical information, especially those concerning landmarks, out of spatial descriptions on the Web and converting into map expression.

Acquisition of Landmark Knowledge 1 Running head: ACQUISITION OF LANDMARK KNOWLEDGE Acquisition and Retention of Structural versus Object Landmark Knowledge When Navigating through a Large-Scale Space
Three studies investigated the acquisition and retention of structural and object landmark knowledge in novel virtual indoor environments. In each study, subjects were trained and tested in complex virtual indoor environments. The studies investigated the rate of acquisition and memory retention for local hallway structure (structural landmarks) or local pictures (object landmarks). These studi...
متن کاملIs the Development of Environmental Knowledge in Human Wayfinding Sequential or Simultaneous?
The purpose of this study is to understand the steps of human wayfinder develop environmental knowledge and associating factors. Understanding how humans acquire environmental knowledge contributes to designing and improving navigational aids. The knowledge we use to solve wayfinding problems—environmental knowledge—is classified into landmark-, route-, and survey-based categories. Different fr...
متن کاملThe role of attention in spatial learning during simulated route navigation
Previous research has demonstrated the importance of attention in the development of survey (or configural) knowledge of the environment. However, it is unclear if attention is also necessary for the development of route knowledge. Our aim in this paper is to evaluate the specific role of attention in the acquisition of both route and survey knowledge during simulated navigation. In four experi...
متن کاملDevelopment of Landmark Knowledge at Decision Points
Two experiments investigated how people develop different landmark knowledge at decision points. Participants learned a route in a virtual city once or five times. One distinctive landmark was placed at each intersection of the route. At test, participants were released at each intersection according to the learning order and were required to determine the turning direction. At each intersectio...
متن کاملHow sense-of-direction and learning intentionality relate to spatial knowledge acquisition in the environment
People's impression of their own "sense-of-direction" (SOD) is related to their ability to effectively find their way through environments, such as neighborhoods and cities, but is also related to the speed and accuracy with which they learn new environments. In the current literature, it is unclear whether the cognitive skills underlying SOD require intentional cognitive effort to produce accu...
